The new BMW X3 xDrive 18d

Posted by Dan on Dec 26, 2009 in Cool Cars

The new, particularly economical entry-level version of BMW’s highly successful Sports Activity Vehicle – average fuel consumption to the EU standard 6.2 litres/100 kilometres (45.6 mpg imp), CO2 rating 165 g/km, emission standard EU5.

Munich. Fascinating agility on all kinds of terrain is now becoming more economical than ever before. Introducing a new entry-level version of the BMW X3, the world’s most successful manufacturer of premium all-wheel-drive vehicles is once again setting the standard for efficiency in a Sports Activity Vehicle.

The new BMW X3 xDrive18d is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel delivering an ample 105 kW/143 hp. Average fuel consumption of the new model in the EU test cycle is a mere 6.2 litres/100 kilometres, equal to 45.6 mpg imp. In CO2 emissions, this means a rating of just 165 grams per kilometre. This makes the BMW X3 the most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive vehicle in its segment also in this performance class. And it almost goes without saying that the BMW X3 xDrive18d in series trim naturally fulfils the EU5 emission standard.

All-round driving pleasure and supreme efficiency have made the BMW X3 a genuine trendsetter, contributing significantly to the car’s worldwide success. Indeed, it was the BMW X3 which for the first time carried over the features and qualities typical of a Sports Activity Vehicle into a new segment, total sales of the X3 now amounting to more than 500,000 units. For a long time the BMW X3 was the only premium vehicle in its class, and to this day it remains the epitome of driving dynamics on the road as well as agility and supreme traction off the beaten track. And last but certainly not least, the BMW X3 offers an unparalleled balance of performance and fuel economy throughout the entire competition segment of BMW X models.

Superior all-wheel-drive technology, powerful traction and premium quality now with even greater all-round economy.

The attractive combination of all these features is now borne out in yet another excellent rendition in the guise of the new BMW X3 xDrive18d. The benefits of BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology, the spontaneous development of power typical of BMW’s diesel engines, and the uncompromising quality of a genuine premium model now come with an even higher standard of economy.

The BMW X3 xDrive18d is powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine featuring an all-aluminium crankcase and common rail direct fuel injection developing maximum output of 105 kW/143 hp at 4,000 rpm. Maximum torque of 350 Newton-metres (258 lb-ft) at just 1,750 rpm ensures truly outstanding traction and pulling power at all times. The new BMW X3 xDrive18d accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 10.3 seconds and has a top speed of 195 km/h or 121 mph.

In conjunction with BMW EfficientDynamics naturally featured as standard, the superior all-round efficiency of the diesel engine ensures the outstanding economy of the BMW X3 xDrive18d. Offering average fuel consumption of just 6.2 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 45.6 mpg imp) and a CO2 rating of 165 grams per kilometre, the new model is even more economical and cleaner than the former leader on the efficiency scale, the 130 kW/177 hp BMW X3 xDrive20d (6.5 litres/43.5 mpg imp/172 grams). And just like its “bigger brother”, the new BMW X3 xDrive18d naturally fulfils the EU5 emission standard.

The highly successful BMW X3: efficient, lasting in value, reliable.

The introduction of the new BMW X3 xDrive18d increases the number of engine variants available in this SAV from BMW to no less than seven. The customer has the choice of three petrol-engine models with power output ranging from 110 kW/150 hp to 200 kW/272 hp and four diesel models culminating in the 210 kW/286 hp BMW X3 xDrive35d as the most dynamic performer in the range.

Like all engine variants the new BMW X3 xDrive18d also comes as standard with BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system. This permanent, electronically masterminded all-wheel drive ensures variable distribution of drive power front-to-rear, promoting both driving dynamics on the road and safe, secure traction off the beaten track, with drive power constantly going to the wheels where it can be converted most effectively into actual driving forces on the road.

Thanks to the outstanding and truly convincing qualities of xDrive also available in many other BMWs, BMW remained the world’s most successful manufacturer of all-wheel-drive vehicles in the premium segment also in 2008.

Over and above such outstanding efficiency and fascinating agility, the BMW X3 also offers truly excellent reliability. In 2009, for example, the X3 was lauded for the second time in a row with the renowned Yellow Angel Award by Germany’s and, indeed, the world’s largest motoring club, the Allgemeine Deutsche Automobilclub (ADAC), for outstanding all-round quality. Proceeding from the findings of ADAC’s breakdown helpers famous throughout Germany as “Yellow Angels”, this leading motoring club once again acknowledged the BMW X3 as the most reliable vehicle on the road in Germany.

Last but certainly not least, BMW’s SAV also comes right at the top in terms of lasting value. In the category of off-road vehicles the market observers at EurotaxSchwacke ranked the BMW X3 No 1 in their AutomobilForecastIndex 2008, confirming that of all vehicles in this segment BMW’s SAV shows the lowest decline in value.

Complete Protection With the Mercedes Catalytic Converter

Posted by Dan on Dec 26, 2009 in Cool Cars

With two vital functions, catalytic converters are a must in every car. Catalytic converters are emission control products that convert harmful combustion byproducts from your engine into harmless compounds. Thus, catalytic converters protect your car’s exhaust system while protecting the environment at the same time. With its very important function, choosing only quality catalytic converters is essential to ensure top protection for the car’s exhaust system and for the environment as well. Mercedes owners are especially fortunate as one good catalytic converter was particularly designed for the Mercedes cars: the Mercedes catalytic converter.

How does the Mercedes Catalytic Converter work? First, it converts carbon monoxide, a harmful gas emitted by the car’s exhaust system, into carbon dioxide, a harmless gas that naturally exists in the environment. Carbon monoxide released in the environment can be fatal to humans, plants, and animals. The main job of the Mercedes catalytic converter is to prevent the vehicle’s harmful emissions like the carbon monoxide to break out in the atmosphere by converting such to carbon dioxide. This process is done without compromising the Mercedes engine’s power and superior performance.

While the process is generally easy to understand, it used to be that the design of such catalytic converters is actually a bit complicated. The first-generation Mercedes catalytic converter was pellet-filled and very restrictive, as it provides the needed emissions reductions but reduces the power of the engine. Mercedes engineers then set to work on redesigning the Mercedes catalytic converter into the powerful but safe device that it is today. Fortunately, the ingenuity of the brains behind Mercedes parts has mastered the design and manufacturing process of the Mercedes catalytic converter, making it effective in converting harmful gases to safe ones without compromising the engine’s production power. At present, Mercedes catalytic converters are generally in two types: a high-flow Mercedes catalytic converter or a regular Mercedes catalytic converter. A high-performance, high-flow Mercedes catalytic converter often feature less restriction than the standard Mercedes catalytic converter, thus deriving better engine performance.

Designed to last longer, there is no need for much replacement or repair of the Mercedes catalytic converter. Nevertheless, when the need for replacement comes and the Mercedes catalytic converter’s function and use has been maximized, immediate replacement must be done to prevent an outbreak of deadly pollution in the air. Replacement Mercedes catalytic converters can be readily found in the market as most auto parts sellers in various stores nationwide and online have these in stock. Car owners on a budget need not worry as the Mercedes catalytic converter and replacement Mercedes catalytic converter is very affordable and is a worthwhile purchase for your Mercedes or any other car. That’s the beauty of the Mercedes catalytic converter – it’s not limited for use in Mercedes cars as non-Mercedes cars can also use it.

Indeed, pollution-control car devices have become more efficient and long-lasting as compared to the early days of the automotive industry. The Mercedes catalytic converter is no exception. Through this wonder auto part, protecting one’s car and the environment is a simple feat.

Lamborghini – a Ferrari Killer?

Posted by Dan on Dec 26, 2009 in Cool Cars

Just like when talking about Ferrari, Lamborghini projects a clear image of power and wealth to those who own one of these super vehicles. This is an Italian company founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini in 1963, so it can be said that this car manufacturing company is fairly new, but it has kept an excellent quality and performance record which rivals that of Ferrari.

Unlike Ferrari’s founder (Enzo Ferrari), Lamborghini’s founded did not have a passion for racing cars like Enzo did, quite the contrary, Ferruccio Lamborghini had a tractor factory!. This tractor factory was indeed the financial base used to create the car company Lamborghini.

The origins of the company as told by Ferruccio Lamborghini’s son is quite amazing. It turns out that Ferruccio went to meet Enzo Ferrari at his factory to complain about he quality of the clutch in the Ferrari 250 GT which he owned at the time (this is a sports car model of the 1950′s). Enzo Ferrari then sent him away by telling him to go drive tractors because he didn’t know how to drive cars. Lamborghini then had his Ferrari’s clutch dismantled and realized that the clutch manufacturer was the same company which provided the clutches for his tractors!, Lamborghini then found a spare part in his warehouse which the thought might solve the problem and voila!, it did the job indeed. Ever since, Lamborghini became a dissatisfied Ferrari client and aimed to beat Ferrari in his own game.

Ferruccio then decided that his cars would have a V12 engine so he hired Giotto Bizzarrini who worked under Ferrari’s engine development team in the past.

And as it turns out, Ferrari and Lamborghini are two automotive groups which are considered rival companies, and equivalents in quality as well as price.

Ever since its creation, Lamborghini has experienced continuous sales growth. It’s cars are among the most powerful, expensive and exclusive in the world, they feature several exclusive characteristics such as high tech V10 – V12 engines, carbon fiber construction and custom styling by the most prestigious automotive designers such as: Franco Scaglione, Zagato, Marcello Gandini, etc.

Among the most recent popular models produced by this company we have: the V12 Lamborghini Diablo reaching a maximum speed of 330km/h; the V12 Lamborghini Murcielago; the V10 Gallardo; the V12 Murcielago LP640 and last but not the least the one of a kind Lamborghini Reventon debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto show. This vehicle manufacturer is without a doubt one of the best in the world.

Porsche Design,especially Designed for You!

Posted by Dan on Dec 26, 2009 in Cool Cars

Although the brand of Porsche Design originates from Porsche family, father of Porsche sports car, it dose not has a close and clear relationship with Porsche cars.

In 1973,F.A Porsche brought a new era to the watch field with a black time stopwatch, and then he made successive  innovations in titanium metal and watches’exterior design.

Even the year of 1973 found Porsche’s production of the first compass wristwatch with  the help of IWC. And during the 20 years of later cooperation, Porsche established a prestigious brand image with the help of that of IWC’s, while IWC exploited its sportswatch market, through which they both set solid foundation for their glorious accomplishment.

In 1995, F.A.Porsche took over Eterna watch factory and began to run it by himself.

Ernst F.Seyr’s aim was to produce a machine time stopwatch for user to easily read the time.He first invited Paul Gerber as the technical consultant, who once invented bell time stopwatch for Fortis, and who at that time was  a member of Horological Academy of Independant Creators(AHCI),then he particularly extended his factory and recruitied more workers.

At the end of 2001, Eterna officially took over the latter blueprint’s design and modification, and began a programme to produce his archetypal watch, which got 12 experienced watchmaking masters, designers and CNC engineers involved. The breathtaking Indicator did not come out before 2004.

In the year of 2003,Porsche Company became a major shareholder of Porsche Design Company, and a new Group—-PLH was set in Bitgenma Sea???Becingen.

By October, the new group has already integrated Porsche’s business in luxury accessories and patents, and the promotion on all brands except for auto manufacture.

Porsche Design belongs in PLH, whose major management is in the 12-staff Porsche Design Office  on the lake bank ,Zell and the Selection area, and it covers Porsche Company accessory ,costume, and sports device(like Porsche bicycle).

65% of the stocks belongs to Porsche Company, the other 35% to Porsche family, which shows us the tendency that Porsche Design will return to Porsche.

Is Aston Martin DB2 A True Supercar

Posted by Dan on Dec 26, 2009 in Cool Cars

In 1953, the Aston Martin DB2/4 was the first comprehensive revamp of the DB2 car, because the car needed to evolve. But the DB2 would always be known as the car that single handedly revived Aston Martin’s career and pushed it on to greatness. The DB2 was replaced in the autumn of 1953 by the new look and feel DB2/4, and was praised for being better than its predecessor by far. The DB2/4 name meant that it was very much an Aston Martin, David Brown creation but just with four seats. But although it was four seats instead of 2, it was not a more spacious vehicle at that because the wheelbase remained unchanged, so a lot of close accommodation and shuffling around were necessary for a not so comfortable fit. As a matter of fact there was really no kind of room for the back passenger’s legs with the front seats pushed almost all the way to the back. That was a poor “development” factor by Aston Martin for an otherwise superb car.

Aston Martin DB2/4 possessed a flush and contoured fastback design that was viewed as a bit more practical due to the fact that back seats and top hinged back hatch lengthened the car by 9cm more than the DB2. The top hinged hatchback was the biggest enhancement to the sports car, and the first time it was ever done, resulting in a larger luggage space. There were both coupe and convertible body-styles of the DB2/4, but the coupe’s look was slightly altered from the convertibles’. The difference was a one-piece windshield displacing the previous divided glass, and the rear roof structure was humped, in order to provide some sort of headroom and comfort to those unlucky enough to have to ride in the back.

The transmission was a four speed manual David Brown, with drums for both back and front brakes, because the technology of disc pads was in its beginnings and not at yet ripe. The body of DB2/4 is made out of aluminum, and it features an independent chassis, and peculiar trailing-link suspension. The dimensions of the car are a weight of 1257kg, a wheelbase of 2515mm, a front and back track of 1372mm, a length of 4305mm, a width of 1651mm, and a height of 1359mm.

The DB2 Vantage 125 horsepower 2580cc DOCH straight 6 engine has now become standard within this vehicle, thus making this a very fast car by 1950s criteria, achieving a top speed of 111.2mph (179km/h) and acceleration of 0-60 in 12.6 seconds, and the 0-¼mile in 18.9 seconds, plus a torque of 195Nm (143.8ft-lbs) at 2400rpm. The designers also repositioned a smaller fuel tank above the spare. The overall result is a versatile and exciting sports tourer that exceeds all expectations. Sales of the DB2/4 skyrocketed and it was in high demand, so much that in mid-1954 a bigger capacity engine was offered 2922cc with 140bhp output.

DB2/4 third body layout came out in 1955, a notch-back coupe interpretation of the convertible, and with this change came a traditional front fenders and hood affixed to the chassis. The different DB2/4 generations were referred to as Mark Is, Mark IIs, and the eventually Mark IIIs in the wings. And the overall production of the cars were very low by any standard, at its highest the DB2/4 was being manufactured at six or seven cars per week, being a rigidly a hand-built car although it was in high demand. The car was an extreme successful for Aston Martin, and it was really still only the beginning.

Racing Series for Ferrari Owners

Posted by Dan on Dec 26, 2009 in Cool Cars

If you bought a Ferrari, you likely made that purchase for investment reasons, you tell yourself. And that is likely true, but what is also true is that you bought it because you love to drive a sports car fast, it cannot be denied. If this describes your relationship to your Ferrari, and if you have had some race training and experience, then you might be ready to participate in the North American Ferrari Challenge Series for non-professional racers who are Ferrari owners competing in racing Ferrari cars against each other.

Ferrari selects a different model vehicle to feature each year of the Ferrari series. For this year, F430 Challenge with a booming 479 hp is the car of choice. The rules stipulate that the drivers compete for fun and in a sense of “fair play.” It is not a jumping-off point for the aspiring race car driver; instead, it is an end unto itself. The Ferrari Challenge Series is sanctioned by the Grand American Road Racing Association.

The series will also be host to the Ferrari Shell Historic Challenge. Vintage Ferrari racing is the hook that draws avid fans to the track to see these lovely vehicles. These races are open to unmodified Ferraris as well as race Maseratis built before the 1980s. They are also open to vintage Alfa Romeos that team Scuderia Ferrari raced during the pre-World War II years.

Several of the races in the series will also showcase Formula One vehicles under private ownership and the FXX, a special 800 horsepower prototype. On the same weekends of the Challenge series, Ferrari owners can participate in Ferrari Driving Clinics. Expert instruction is available to help you get the most out of your sports car, and you will spend time in workshops along with time behind the wheel of your Ferrari, with instructors providing tips to help improve your skills and get the most out of your vehicle.

These Challenge races for Ferrari owners are held all over North America. Florida, Virginia, California, and Montreal will provide race tracks that will host the events. They included the Homestead-Miami Speedway, the Infineon Raceway, the Virginia International Raceway, and Le Circuit earlier this season. Upcoming races will be held at the California Speedway and Laguna Seca in August. The Challenge series culminates in a World Finals, to be held in Italy in October. The best owners from Italy, Europe and North America bring their Ferraris together to compete for the glory of becoming the overall champion of all the series.

The North American Ferrari Challenge Series is open to the public, and they are allowed to visit the paddock area to look at all of the assembled Ferraris and take pictures.

Bugatti History

Posted by Dan on Dec 24, 2009 in Other

The Bugatti is a classic car that dates back to the early 1900s. It was founded in France in the year 1909 by an Italian man named Ettore Bugatti. Many people found Bugatti to be somewhat of a genius though he was also referred to as being very eccentric. Bugatti himself was born in Milan. He was a very creative man that was highly respected for his amazing engineering skills. His designs were always quite artistic, a talent that he came by naturally. His own father had been a designer of fine furniture and jewellery. The need to create and design is something that was a huge part of the Bugatti family.

The Bugatti automobile was vastly different from other cars of the time. Bugatti preferred to scrape the engine block by hand so that it was as flat as it could possibly be. This eliminated the need for gaskets, which are found on most other cars, then and now. Bugatti had a personal belief that weight was always an issue and he constantly strived to find ways to make the weight distribution of his vehicle’s more efficient. He was also very dedicated to finding new and better ways of doing everything when it came to the physical construction of his cars.

One thing that makes Bugatti so unique is that only a small number of each model was made. This puts them at the top of many classic car collector lists. These cars are incredibly rare and worth a lot of money. It was just recently that a Bugatti car was discovered in the garage of a deceased man. Only seventeen of these cars were made so the discovery was a special thing as far as classic car history goes.

Bugatti is known to many as the most successful racing car of all time. The models used to race were considered to be among the best car that anyone could use in that type of event. This is the reason for much of the fame that this car now has, despite the rarity of it. Like every other car company of the time, the Second World War had a significant negative impact on sales and production. The production factory was destroyed and the property was seized during the war. Though Bugatti was determined to carry on with his work in the auto industry, he died in 1947 before he could implement any of his new design plans.

Despite a few attempts at resurrection at the hands of a family member, it just wasn’t meant to be for Bugatti and the brand began to die out. Volkswagen has since bought the name Bugatti. Bugatti models have since been produced but they are not in mass production. It is unlikely that Bugatti will ever have the success or recognition that it once had. It is now more of a car collector’s dream than anything else. Bugatti is so popular it was even turned into a fictional story by Salman Rushdie. This fine European car has had its day in the sun and now it is a wonderful part of history.
