The Renault F1 Team: Its Failures and Triumphs

The Renault F1 Team has not been very lucky with the Canadian Grand Prix and this extends to the Montreal Circuit Gilles Villeneuve where the team has never had any success. Since the year 1978, the company has recorded four wins, twelve podiums and six pole positions. Montreal is also the only circuit where a Renault has ever competed in the Canadian Grand Prix although in the year 1977 the event was held at Mosport, where Jean-Pierre Jabouille unfortunately failed to qualify the RS01 which would have been its fifth Grand Prix.

Renault turbo power has raced in Montreal from 1978 to 1986 but it was only in 1985 that the French manufacturer’s race car was able to obtain a pole position at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. And they achieve this in style with a Lotus-Renault front row for Elio de Angelis on pole and Ayrton Senna alongside. Despite what the team has achieved still the race has proven to be a disappointment for the team with De Angelis managing only P5 as compared to Ferrari that took a one-two.

Throughout the racing career of the Renault turbo the best result that it has gotten was a P2 finish by Eddie Cheever in 1983, it was also the time when teammate Alain Prost was fighting for the world championship in which he has only manage a P5. After the being unlucky at the Grand-Prix, both Renaults have retired while running second and third having qualified in the same positions.

Then came the V10 era, which has changed everything for the Renault team their first win came in Montreal heading a Williams-Renault one-two with Belgian Thierry Boutsen leading home Riccardo Patrese in 1989. Another victory for Renault the maker of Renault oxygen sensor was obtained in 1991 until Nigel Mansell retired on the final lap fortunately Alain Prost set the record straight in 1993 with the 45th win for a Renault engine.

Then in 1995, an all-Renault front row saw Michael Schumacher’s Benetton take Renault’s 100th pole position ahead of Damon Hill. The following year, an all-Renault front row of Hill and Villeneuve was transformed into a Renault one-two-three with Hill, Villeneuve, and Alesi on the podium.

Unfortunately by the year 2002 it seems like the ill-fortune of the team have returned despite the fact that the Renault cars have performed well on the stop-start Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Fernando Alonso has set the fastest lap in 2003 but unfortunately he finished a place away from the podium.

2004 came, the cars looked strong and ready but it seems like bad luck is on the team’s side again that both cars retired with driveshaft failures. Then the following year, 2005, Giancarlo Fisichella and Fernando Alonso have both decided to retire while still leading the race and it wasn’t until 2006 that Fernando Alonso took a Renault to victory that is after the team’s cars locked out the front row. It was the 32nd win for the Renault chassis and the 122nd win for the Renault engine in Formula 1.

Xc60, the Future Design Direction of Volvo

Volvo, Ford’s Swedish luxury brand has earlier introduced a new sport utility vehicle that marks the beginning of a new design concept that would be employed for future Volvo cars. Steve Mattin, Volvo Cars Design Director said that the car represent “the DNA of future Volvos”. He further stated, “We’re about to elevate Volvo’s DNA to new levels by pumping up the volume. It takes the emotion of the C30 a step further.”

The XC60 that made its debut at the recently held North American International Auto Show in Detroit was said to exude brand new styling and design that reflects the forthcoming lineup of the automaker.

The XC60 is an addition to the SUV lineup of Volvo. Its features include a glass roof, mechanical tailgate, 20-inch rims, new shifting mechanism and newly styled grille. Its large Volvo logo has also made it look bolder and meaner. As an added feature, it was given a distinct rear end to further emphasize the tailgate and the Volvo logo.

This is precisely what Steve Mattin meant when he said, “If you can recognize a Volvo from 50 meters today, I want to get to the point where people will be able to spot one from twice the distance in the future. We need to be recognizable as Volvo. We’re still about Scandinavian simplicity; we can’t be playful or do styling for the sake of styling. Volvos last a long time, so our design must have legs. But we can’t be too simple or we’d edge toward blandness. And we can’t just change; we must be fresh. I want to broaden our design and have more variation between car lines.”

Volvo Car President Fredrik Arp has also added that the XC60 is likely to become “the C30 owner’s next car”. Arp also added that the production version of the SUV would be very much identical to the concept. Mattin said that XC60 was designed like a “giant iPod”.

The vehicle has undergone meticulous engineering so as not to compromise the traditional Volvo safety features. Volvo enthusiasts could still get to see the Volvo auto care feature that the loved like the low-speed adaptive braking system called the City Safety. This safety feature prevents the XC60 from running and crashing into the car in front that is running at low speed. The SUV is also given Volvo’s 3-liter 6-cylinder flex-fuel engine which allows the used of ethanol instead of the petrol. The new engine also reduces emissions by up to eighty percent.

“Our V8 package feels immensely solid. When it comes to power and performance, we’re in the same class as the very best in the segment. What’s more, we’re sure that a large proportion of these customers will appreciate the fact that the power and driveability can be combined with high safety and good environmental properties. It’s important that we can launch a V8 without compromising on our core values,” said Hans-Olov Olsson, Volvo Cars President and CEO.

The XC60 is Volvo’s entry to the fastest-growing sector of the automotive market. The automaker is also expecting for its XC60 to boost sales by seventy-five percent or 443,000 units of vehicles sold expected in the next couple of years. Volvo is also expecting that a great number of its buyers will come from the young and active urbanities. Arp also added that the XC60 will be as important as the C30 in expanding the brand’s sales. He further stated that the concept is a good indicator of what the production model will look like. It should be noted that Arp has previously made a statement confirming that the production will be identical to the concept.

Volvo has high hopes for its XC60 same as its other models. The XC60 SUV just like the other Volvo models are equipped with top-of-the-line auto parts from its most complicated parts down to bitsy parts like the Volvo ignition coil. With a Porsche Classic, you Can be Sure That People Will Turn Their Heads

For sports car enthusiasts all over the world, and in particular for Porsche fans all over the world the numbers 356 hold a special meaning. The reason for this lies in the chronicles of history, and a date that would forever live on in the memory of all Porsche fans. The year was 1948 and the date was the 8th of June. This was the birth year of the Porsche classic Type 356 sports car.

It weighed in at a modest 650kg, had a 1.1 liter capacity center engine and had an immodest (at the time) 40HP under its hood. Difficult to even find one of these original Porsche classic cars, if you do across them you will not be surprised to learn that they are considered priceless. With all good reason of course.

Besides being the first ever Porsche classic cars to come into existence there were only a total of 50 made and they were all without exception hand built, and that’s saying a lot. These penultimate Porsche classic cars were the harbingers of the 356 that we can still see today.

Unfortunately for all concerned the 356 Porsche classic car line was discontinued after 17 years in April of 1965. To that date just over 81,000 356 Porsche classic cars had left the assembly line. In the beginning no more than 500 were expected to sell.

This was a happy mistake on the part of the “father” of the Porsche classic car, Ferry Porsche, because by March of 1954 ten times the initial estimated amount of 356 Porsche classic cars had been sold.

The discontinuation of the 365 line however was not the end of the Porsche name or the car. A new concept Porsche classic was in the makings and by 1963 – two years before the 356 was discontinued – the Porsche classic 911 had become a reality.

This Porsche classic was the foundation for many a sports car to come and indeed still lives on to this day. On June 15th of 1996, Porsche reached another milestone and the one millionth Porsche was delivered from the assembly line.

And when all is said and done, the Porsche classic still lives on in the classic Porsche design and logo, and if you own a Porsche classic, you can be sure that people will turn their heads to look you. Even in this day and age of sports supercars a classic lives on.

2006 Aston Martin V8 Vantage N24

The 2006 Aston Martin V8 Vantage N24 racecar was designed subsequently in 2005 as a stock car, and it has its foundations firmly on the critically acclaimed V8 Vantage road car. The car was named after the “Nürburgring 24-hour race”, which it has done very well in a couple of times, and it is one of the most exacting and assiduous racing circuits in the world. The N24 is only constructed toward European specifications, and it was given a multitude of alterations, upgrades, and changes to make it on the same plane as any other car in competitive racing. The car was only produced as a limited production vehicle, and only built by hand, which is the Aston Martin stamp of extensive fine craftsmanship.

The V8 Vantage N24’s entire interior has been outfitted for optimum racing design, as little is left within the interior of the car. Items removed are all typical interior adornments e.g. airbags, air condition, embellishments, and seats. The facia molding is kept and is adjusted into Alcantara, plus a “Recaro Pole Position” competition seat is added to the car, with a passenger seat as an option, and a quick release steering wheel is fitted with suede trimmings, which is added as standard. All the interior coverings including the doors are substituted for the new “Twintex” lightweight mouldings. Also the interior has an FIA certified, complete high strength, steel roll cage measuring 40 x 15mm.

The body of the N24 is made up of lightweight aluminum side stripes, and redone side sills with a visible carbon fibre rib. The N24 also has a tail safety latch with the hinges are being kept; a quick release hood; a Motorsport towing eye fastened onto the chassis; polycarbonated side and rear windows with a slide opening for the driver; and there are preparation openings for tapping plates which serves use of pneumatic jacks. The specifications of the body are a width of 1865mm (73.5in); a front track of 1580mm (62.2in); a rear track 1590mm (62.6in); a wheelbase of 2600mm (102.5in); a height of 1210mm (47.5in); a length of 4380mm (172.5in); and a weight of 1330kgs, 250kgs lighter than a normal car.

The N24’s engine is a 4.3 litre V8 has been changed to fortify throttle performance and replication by lightening and balancing the flywheel, the connecting rods, the pistons, and the crankshaft. The cylinder heads are redone by all the exhaust and inlet ports, which have been smoothed to advance the overall compression ratio. Also the engine regulator system was recalibrated for improved gas flow. The N24 also has a open flowing exhaust system with “ITG cylindrical foam air filters”, and a lightweight rear muffler minus any skirt valves. The V8 Vantage’s dry sump lubrication method is retained in order to assist with oil spillage while extreme cornering. The overall effect equated to a maximum horsepower of 410bhp (305kW) at 7500rpm, which is a 30bhp growth over the V8 Vantage, and a maximum torque of 425Nm (313lb-ft).

The transmission of the N24 is the traditional six speed manual, equipped with a “breather catch tank”, along with a “Valeo twin-plate cerametallic clutch” (215mm) with a lightweight flywheel, entirely to powertrain formula. The V8 Vantage’s highly polished suspension received minor changes for the N24’s track use e.g. bigger front and back anti roll bars; “Bilstein Suspensions flexible ride height aluminum dampers”; solitary rate, flat ground, 2.5in “ID Eibach” springs with separate aiding springs; and the front sub-frame being modernized for more castor and camber. The wheels include front and rear “Speedline 10 x 18in, ET45mm cast magnesium”, with “Yokohama A048-R” tyres, and “Pagid RS 29″ racing brake pads.

The 2006 V8 Vantage N24 is developed on Aston martin traditions, has proven itself time and time again as a factory manufactured car that ready to take on any race. The level of fine details on a racing car conforms to the typical standards set so long ago, and has set its on rules for racing while carrying on the “Vantage” name.

Mazda Drifter Revitalized as Bt-50

Do you remember that very long pick up truck?

The Drifter was first introduced in 1961. But its latest generation is now known as the Mazda BT-50 which is soon to be launched in South Africa’s competitive automotive market.

Doreen Mashinini, the Mazda Marketing Manager, said that their company’s goal in developing the new Mazda pick up was to get the qualities that gained the previous generations of the Mazda B-Series pickup praise and distinctions from around the entire auto industry. He explained that they simultaneously need to adopt the true spirit of Zoom-Zoom by creating a new magnitude of driving standards and pleasure.

The manager added that the BT-50 comes with a complete improvement of the exterior as well as the interior. The company claims that the pick up is redesigned in order to persuade the customers who love adventures, and at the same time in order to offer practicality and other wonderful benefits.

The newly developed MZR-CD 3.0 direct-injection common-rail turbo diesel engine is matched to with the established 2.6-litre petrol and 2.5-litre turbo diesel units. The 3.0-litre power plant yields a claimed 115kW at 3200rpm and offers a maximum torque of 380Nm at 1800rpm. A new five-speed manual transmission has been adopted so that the greater power and torque generated by the MZR-CD unit will be supported.

Some of the features that will be available are the 4W-ABS and EBD systems. Some models will come with dual front airbags plus new side airbags that would protect the head as well as the chest when a crash occurs.

Mashinini concluded that the Mazda BT-50 is set to be the most powerful, comfortable sports activity vehicle Mazda has ever introduced in its entire existence in the industry.

The Mazda BT-50 will be locally and officially launched on July 2007.

About Mazda B-series

The Mazda B-series is also known as the Mazda Drifter. It is a 2-door pick-up truck that was first manufactured in 1961 by Mazda Motor Corporation, owner of Mazda OEM parts. The mark 7 is the current model, which was initially built in 1999 and can be manufactured with one of four body styles and one of two engines.

Mazda has used form first B-Series pickup truck the engine displacement to determine the name. In effect, the B1500 had a 1.5 L engine, and the new B4000 has a 4.0 L V6. Mazda used the ‘Proceed’ name in the Japanese market on the car’s compact pickup trucks. Moreover, another line of larger trucks is available which is called the ‘Mazda Titan’. Other names used for the pick up series include ‘Mazda Bravo’ in Australia, ‘Mazda Bounty’ in New Zealand), ‘Mazda Magnum’ / ‘Thunder’ / ‘Fighter’ in Thailand, and ‘Mazda Drifter’ in South Africa.

Mazda’s 33.4% of controlling interest is controlled by the Ford Motor Company. And as a result, the sharing of the Mazda B-Series and Ford Ranger are basically the same. Since 1970s, the Ford Courier name is also used and the line continues today in both Australia and New Zealand.

Nonetheless, the public should be reminded that the Mazda B-Series and Ford Ranger twins that are marketed in North America are unrelated to the ones sold elsewhere. These vehicles are built by Mazda and the models in North America are developed by Ford.

These are engineered by Mazda, whereas the North American models are developed by Ford.
