It has a six speed manual gear box in Britain, with a two litre engine. Nice car, but expect to renew the front tyres after 7-8 thousand miles. The geometry in the front drive wheels is bad.

If I could get one with the 5 speed AND the 2.3L turbo, I’d be all over it.

I don’t think mazda is trying to attract sports drivers. There trying to attract young familllies that dont need such a big minivan but needs the room for cargo and getting children around. The fuel ecnommy is great compared to other vans/suv.sedans.

I traded in my honda fit for a Mazda 5 and it was the best thing I ever did. Although my house hold is 3 we always have company on weekends with the inlaws and everyone is confortable in one instead of 2 vehicles. I have a pearly white with dark tinted windows it really looks good and my wife loves it. I have a Mazda 3 dxp which I use to go to work. The fit simply jumped and rattled to much.

It is quick especially with the diesel engine. The car is surprisingly light for it’s size and look which combined with huge torque diesel provides (360Nm) and 6-speed manual gear box makes it real fun to drive. I got mine almost 2 years ago and I am already planning to change it for new Mazda 5

I think either their turbo 2.3L or the 3.7L should be an option.
Never driven one but it can’t be that quick, among even the larger minivans.

The 5-speed manual is fun.

I drove a 2008 Mazda 5 rental. Nice, solid vehicle and very spacious. Fun to drive? Not in your wildest dreams. The 5-speed automatic is slow to downshift and hampers the engine response. The 4 banger drinks gas like a V8. The seats are not that comfortable. Handling is good for a car based minivan.
Overall, Mazda needs to give this thing a proper 6-speed automatic, steering wheel paddle shifters, a true sport mode transmission programming, better seats and improved fuel economy, response.

White 2009 Mazda 5 GT AutoTrans. Blk Cloth int. Once I can afford it, my first new car will be such an easy decision to make. A minivan that hauls almost twice what my other favorite Honda Fit hauls, with a bigger engine, but not a damn V6 like all the other vans today, that actually gets the same mileage as my 1994 Civic. This is the perfect car for my needs and the test drive was very impressive!

Great, entertaining review! I had to laugh every time, though, with the little interlude between each segment- the deep base notes punctuated by multiple car horns blaring, make the scenes of the Mazda5 cruising through the placid countryside sound like an LA road rage battle.
